Tata Tiago first time in 2020 facelift seen completely undisguised

While Tata is gearing up to introduce its Altroz premium hatchback on January 22, the automaker is also working on a major update for its entry-level model, the Tiago. The car has already been caught testing on Indian roads earlierand today, we bring you images of the upcoming Tiago sans camouflage for the first time, which could indicate an imminent launch soon enough.

Images of the undisguised model reveal that the facelift will bring about significant changes to the Tiago’s front facia, including slimmer headlamps and sleeker grille, underlined by Tata’s signature ‘Humanity Line’ in chrome. In order to comply with the pedestrian safety norms that come into effect from October this year, the hatch also gets a raised bonnet which imparts the front end a sharper profile – a look similar to the Altroz. The front bumper too has been completely redesigned with a large air dam and reshaped fog lamp housings with horizontal slats.

The spied model’s side profile largely remains similar to that of the outgoing car, so do the 15-inch dual-tone alloy wheels. A blacked-out roof and contrast coloured wing mirrors prove that the Tiago will retain its dual-tone paint shade offering as well. The rear can be expected to be tweaked with a revised bumper and updated tail lamp inserts.

With the facelift, the company will also spruce up the cabin with minor styling tweaks including new fabric seat upholstery. The current Tiago comes equipped with a digital instrument cluster, 7-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, automatic air conditioner, drive modes and projector headlamps, and the same can be expected with the updated model as well. Safety kit will continue to include dual airbags, ABS, EBD, rear parking sensors, seatbelt reminder and a high speed alert system as standard.

On the mechanical front, the current-gen 1.2-litre petrol engine will be updated to meet the stringent BS6 norms. Transmission duties will continue to be handled by a 5-speed manual and an AMT automatic gearbox. However, as a result of Tata deciding to axe small diesels from its line-up, a major omission will be the current-gen Tiago’s 70hp, 1.05-litre diesel engine. However, there are talks of a CNG variant being introduced a little later.

The petrol Tiago carries a sticker price of Rs4.39-6.37 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the time being and the facelift can be expected to command a slight premium. When launched, the refreshed Tiago will battle it out with the Maruti Suzuki WagonR and Celerio, the Hyundai Santro and the Datsun Go in our market.

One of the first new Tata cars to feature a BS-VI-compliant petrol engine will be the Tigor facelift. We had previously reported on how the refreshed Tiago will drop the 1.05-litre diesel and get a BS-VI petrol engine, the same 85hp 1.2-litre motor shared with the Tata Tigor. Like the hatchback it is based on, the new Tigor will also be available with just the petrol engine. Tata had updated the Tigor in October last year with a new top-spec XZ+ variant, slightly different exterior design, and more equipment in the cabin.

Besides the new motor, the Tata Tigor facelift will also get a number of design tweaks to the exterior, such as a more aggressive nose (similar to the Tata Altroz) and front bumpers. While the rear is also expected to get a redesigned bumper, the alloy wheels on the spied model look unchanged; they’re the same 15-inch black-finished wheels currently available on the top-spec Tigor XZ+.

Changes to the cabin are expected to include minor styling tweaks to the dashboard, new interior trim, new seat upholstery and an updated touchscreen infotainment system, which will be Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatible. In terms of safety kit, all variants of the compact sedan already get dual front airbags and ABS, though Tata will equip all trims of the Tigor facelift with rear parking sensors, a speed alert system and seatbelt reminders for the driver and front passenger.

When it launches in India, the new Tata Tigor’s prices will definitely rise by a significant amount, though it is still expected to undercut rivals like the Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Ford Aspire, Honda Amaze and Hyundai Xcent.
